New Cardiff Theatre Company, ‘Ad Hoc’ brings Sunday Theatre to Cardiff

New Cardiff Theatre Company, ‘Ad Hoc’ brings Sunday Theatre to Cardiff Ad Hoc is a brand new theatre company, based in Cardiff, which was formed to create a richer experience for the theatregoer by performing not just one play, but a series of short plays in one night. Ad Hoc’s aim is to perform plays by new and established writers that are between 20-40 minutes long, which will provide the audience with different stories, ideas and even forms of theatre in one night.

The company’s first two plays, ‘Matchplay’ and ‘The Mark of the Man’ will be performed at Sherman Cymru, Cardiff on Wednesday, 25th June and Thursday, 26th June 2008.

‘Matchplay' is written in French by Frederick Blanchette and has been translated to English by Christopher Campbell. Directed by Gareth Bale and with Iola Hughes and James Ashton in the main roles, ‘Matchplay’ is a fast-paced light comedy revolving around a date. Simon takes Dinah to watch his favourite football team for the first time. But will the football-phobic Dinah appreciate his idea of a romantic evening?

In contrast, the second play, ‘The Mark of the Man’, written by Greg Glover, is a grittier production and set during the tumultuous era of the 1984 Miners Strike. It tells the story of three desperate miners who take control of the Newport Transporter bridge unaware of how their personal lives will eventually clash with their political aims. ‘The Mark of the Man’ is directed by Ian Staples, with Brian Hibbard, (The Flying Pickets, Coronation Street), Gareth Potter, (EastEnders, Torchwood) and bright new talent, Aled Wyn Thomas, in the main roles.

Actor, Director and Founder of ‘Ad Hoc’, Gareth John Bale, explains the fledgling company’s ethos:

“I played a character in Matchplay last year in London. The play was part of the Miniaturists show in the Arcola Theatre. There were three different shows - all with different actors and directors. We performed twice on a Sunday in a very relaxed but packed theatre. I thought that this was a great idea and something we could do in Cardiff. So after much thought and a great deal of support form Sherman Cymru, Ad Hoc was started with this concept in mind. I'm not sure if Cardiff is ready for Sunday theatre but the basic idea is the same - except that it's on a Wednesday and Thursday night!

“I am thrilled that as this is the first Ad Hoc production we have an experienced director in Ian Staples to do ‘Mark of the Man’ by Welsh writer Greg Glover. Ian has managed to get some fantastic actors involved in the project with Brian Hibbard, Gareth Potter and Aled Wyn Thomas in his cast. Iola Hughes and James Ashton are wonderful together in Matchplay, which I'm directing. All in all it should make for a very exciting night!”
