![]() Amy Hodge and Arwel Gruffydd have been appointed to help lead and support Sherman Cymru’s commissioning and writer development work, and will assist Director, Chris Ricketts, on realising an ambitious and adventurous theatre programme. Amy Hodge will be responsible for English language work, whilst Arwel Gruffydd will be responsible for Welsh language work. Amy Hodge was recipient of the Jerwood Directors Award 2007/08, for which she recently directed Mules by Winsome Pinnock at the Young Vic. She is an Associate Artist of Operating Theatre, a new writing initiative that works out of the Tristan Bates Theatre, London. Amy comments: “I'm incredibly excited about the next few years at Sherman Cymru. There is already a great foundation here, upon which we can build to assert Sherman Cymru as the centre for high quality new writing and contemporary theatre in Wales. Watch this space!” Arwel Gruffydd was, until last year, Literary Manager at Sherman Cymru. He has worked extensively as an actor for theatre, film and television and, in recent years, has been developing his work as a director and writer. Arwel will be directing Yr Argae, Sherman Cymru’s forthcoming co-production with new Cardiff based company, Torri Gair. Arwel comments: “The founding of Sherman Cymru has created something of a buzz around new writing in Wales. I’m delighted that I’ve been given the responsibility of directing and developing new Welsh-language work for the company. In a culture that values heritage and tradition as we do, I'm excited to be a part of something of a new beginning.” Continues… Chris Ricketts comments: “I am delighted with these appointments. Both Amy and Arwel share our commitment to explore new work and fresh practice, and they will add real vigour to our work. We have much we want to achieve and they join us at just the right time to help shape and influence our future success.” Sherman Cymru, the new powerhouse for new writing in Wales, was formed in 2007 from the merger of Sgript Cymru and The Sherman Theatre Company. Central to the work Sherman Cymru does is the development and championing of work by Welsh and Wales-based writers, as well as to actively encourage the development of emerging artists of the next generation.
