Secrets at the New Theatre, Cardiff

Secrets at the New Theatre, Cardiff Jacqueline Wilson’s best-selling children’s book Secrets has been adapted for the stage in this exciting new production that visits the New Theatre from Tuesday 29 July. A real treat for children aged 9 and up, this popular adventure story is a moving tale of friendship and growing up.

Secrets tells the story of India and Treasure, two girls from very different walks of life, who meet by chance and become the best of friends. India lives in a large house. She seems to have it all but her parents are so busy worrying about themselves, she thinks they have forgotten about her. Down on the local estate, Treasure is staying with her wonderful Nan. She really doesn’t want to go back and live with her mum, not while her mum’s new man is there.

The two girls escape from their problems by writing their thoughts and feelings in a diary, inspired by their heroine, Anne Frank. However when secrets start jumping out of the page and into real life, Treasure and India find themselves in deep trouble.

Jacqueline Wilson is one of Britain’s most popular children’s writers, whose book sales have topped 20 million. Her work is firmly rooted in reality. She writes about children and teenagers in today’s difficult world and she doesn’t flinch from complex issues such as single parent families, fostering and bullying. She writes with great warmth about her characters and always supports individuality, friendship and love. Wilson has recently been made a Dame for her services to literacy.

Secrets is adapted and directed by Vicky Ireland, one of the country’s foremost directors for children’s theatre and recipient of an MBE for Services to Drama for Children – the first award of its kind. The show stars a vibrant cast of young actors including Sarah-Lee Dicks, who was also the lead in Watershed’s production of The Suitcase Kid last year.

Secrets is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Tuesday 29 July to Saturday 2 August with evening performances at 7.00pm and Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday matinees at 2pm. Tickets range from £7 - £16 – under 16s pay just £7 each - and can booked via the Box Office on 029 2087 8889 or online* at www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk.
