Words in the Woods

Words in the Woods Cardiff based Theatr Iolo, together with the Forestry Commission Wales and the Vale of Glamorgan Forest Education Initiative Cluster Group, are encouraging children's imaginations to be set free in a woodland environment in a project to inspire storytelling in children aged between three and five from 4 schools in the Vale of Glamorgan.

”Words in the Woods" will involve pupils from St Andrews Major Church in Wales Primary School, St Josephs RC Primary School, Eagleswell Primary School and St Brides Major Church in Wales Primary School. They will first visit their local woods - Hensol Forest, a Forestry Commission Wales wood in the Vale of Glamorgan - with FC Wales Education Officer, Sheena O'Leary and Theatre Director, Sarah Argent. They will invite the children to explore their surroundings and carry out activities designed to stimulate their creativity.

The following week, they will return to the forest which will have been transformed in unusual and unexpected ways. There they will meet two actors from Theatr Iolo in character and in costume; these actors will help the children to discover a magical world in the woods by guiding them on an adventure.

The children will then be visited in their schools and encouraged to tell stories inspired by their visits into the woods - these stories will be transcribed word for word to ensure that the children appreciate the importance of their work.

Theatre Director for Young People and Children, Sarah Argent said:
"At 3-5 years old, the children are not yet theatrically literate, so why should their first engagement with theatre not be a piece that was devised in response to the specific location of a particular forest? This makes it even more interesting by inserting the artificial into the natural world."

The culmination of this phase of the project will take place when actors from Theatr Iolo bring to life extracts of the children's stories and present these back in Hensol Forest, on Tuesday, 15th July.

The project is Lottery funded by the Arts Council of Wales and is a collaboration between Theatr Iolo, Forestry Commission Wales and the Vale of Glamorgan Forest Education Initiative Cluster Group.
