NEW HERITAGE MINISTER APPOINTED     

NEW HERITAGE MINISTER APPOINTED First Minister Rhodri Morgan has announced today (Tuesday, 22 July) that Alun Ffred Jones has been appointed as Heritage Minister in his Cabinet following the resignation of Rhodri Glyn Thomas.

The First Minister said: “I am very pleased to welcome Alun Ffred Jones on board into the Cabinet. He is highly qualified to do the job of Heritage Minister given his background and he has worked very hard as an Assembly Member and as the Plaid Cymru lead spokesperson on finance since last year. I know he will make a very positive contribution as Heritage Minister.”

Alun Ffred Jones said "It is a tremendous privilege to be asked to serve the people of Wales. As Heritage Minister in the Welsh Assembly Government I am determined to build on the strong foundations laid by Rhodri Glyn Thomas, and to deliver on the commitments set out in One Wales. Through being an Assembly Member for Arfon I also hope I can contribute to the objectives of this Government of uniting our Nation, spreading prosperity and building confidence in our ability to take good decisions in the interest of Wales."

Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said: "I am delighted to welcome Alun Ffred Jones as a fellow Plaid Cymru Cabinet member. We are fortunate that he brings such wide experience with him as well as his commitment as our deputy group leader to delivering One Wales."

Alun Ffred Jones is an Assembly Member for the Arfon constituency and was first elected in 2003 (for Caernarfon). He sat on the Assembly’s Finance and Rural Development Committees.

He was born in Brynaman in 1949 and was educated in the University of Wales, Bangor. Before his election, he was a Television director and producer for Ffilmiau`r Nant and before that, he was a Welsh teacher and Head of Department and a journalist with HTV.

He is the former Leader of Gwynedd County Council, is Chair of Antur Nantlle and chair of Nantlle Vale Football Club. His main political interests are in broadcasting, community development and the economy. Alun speaks Welsh, English and French.
