summer dance 2008

summer dance 2008 FORTY talented young dancers take to the stage of St David’s Hall, Cardiff on Saturday, August 9, 2008 to present a stunning new show, Serenade.

The performance will also be a Silver Anniversary celebration for St David’s Hall and Diversions, the Dance Company of Wales.

The show has been created during an intensive Future Dance Cardiff summer school led by Diversions and St David’s Hall’s Arts Active Team.

With Dvorák’s magical and evocative Serenade for Wind performed by Welsh National Opera Young Players, this spectacular collaborative event promises to be an evening of the best in dance and live music.

The Serenade audience is invited to join the performers and both companies for celebration cake after the show.

The 40 participants come from all over South Wales and beyond. Each had to attend auditions for a place, held at the Diversions Dance House, Wales Millennium Centre, with the standard of applicants this year higher than ever before.

Many participants on the summer dance courses of the past have gone on into full time dance training and some have already embarked on their professional dance careers.

Arts Active - the then Education department of St David’s Hall and the New Theatre - mounted its first Youth Dance summer dance in 1997. This week long dance course, culminating in a performance, was an immediate success and in 1999 the partnership with Diversions was initiated and summer dance was born.

Future Dance Cardiff is a creative programme of dance training and performance activities run by Diversions: Participation in partnership with A2: Arts Active, the education and participation team at New Theatre and St David’s Hall.
