Sherman Cymru wins three more Prestigious Awards for Deepcut Play |
![]() At the Stage Awards held on Sunday, Ciaran McIntyre who plays the father Des James won Best Actor, and Rhian Blyth won Best Actress for her portrayal of Cheryl’s army colleague, Jonesy. Deep Cut also won the prestigious Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award, which recognises Festival productions that make a significant contribution to the public's greater awareness and understanding of human rights issues. Amnesty International's Scottish Programme Director, John Watson, said: ”Deep Cut is a fantastic example of why the Freedom of Expression Award exists. This is theatre of the highest quality, but this is a play that wants to do more than entertain - it sets out to change the world.” Accepting the award, writer of Deep Cut, Swansea based Philip Ralph said: On behalf of myself, the director Mick Gordon, and the cast and crew of Deep Cut, we are absolutely delighted to receive this award - most especially because we believe that it represents a clear signal of support from Amnesty and the judges for the families of the four soldiers who died at Deepcut and a vindication of their long struggle for justice. We hope that it will prick the consciences of those who have sought to block and withhold the truth from them and that it may prove to be the crack in the dam that leads to a public inquiry.” Produced by Sherman Cymru, Deep Cut, uses original source material and powerful first hand testimonies of those closest to Private Cheryl James, from Llangollen, North Wales, who was one of four young soldiers who died from gunshot wounds in unexplained circumstances between 1995 and 2002. The play follows Cheryl’s family’s fight for a full public inquiry to gain answers from the people responsible for their daughter’s care. As well as a successful sell-out run in Edinburgh, Deep Cut, has already picked up two other awards in the last few weeks including the Fringe First Award, which commends new work at the Festival and a Herald Angel Award for production excellence. Director of Deep Cut, Mick Gordon, comments: Deep Cut marks a rare moment in my career. To feel proud of a piece of work is one thing. To feel involved in doing the right thing, in campaigning against injustice and for a truth beyond the theatre, is quite another. How wonderful that both the attempt and achievement of Deep Cut has been acknowledged.” Deep Cut will be coming back to Wales this September with performances at Clwyd Theatr Cymru on 9 – 13 September, and then returning to Sherman, Cardiff on 16 – 27 September. |
