A star is born - From Narberth to Hollywood

A star is born - From Narberth to Hollywood The Toronto Film Festival is currently celebrating the ariival of a prodigious new acting talent in director Richard Linklater's latest offering 'Me and Orson Welles', starring Christian McKay, Zac Ephron and Claire Danes. All the reviews so far are gushing in their praise for Englishman McKay's outstanding portrayal of the prodigious Welles. But Narberth knew of his talents as early as 2004, closely followed by Cardiff, Swansea and Newport where McKay played Welles on stage in 'Rosebud; The Lives of Orson Welles', written by myself and directed by Josh Richards of Tenby. The show gained a Fringe First at Edinburgh the same year and the prestigious 'Edinburgh to New York' award.

Mc Kay happened to be doing Rosebud in New York last May when the Hollywood director got to hear about his amazing performance in a New York Times review and flew him out immediately for a screen test. And now already one reviewer of 'Me and Orson Welles' has suggested his portrayal of Welles in the movie is the kind of debut hit that could gain McKay a nomination for the highest accolades. Anyone who saw his stage performances in Rosebud at the Wales Millennium Centre last year will hardly be surprised at McKay's rise to international recognition. But remember - Narberth saw him first play Orson Welles!
