Gavin and Stacey star Alison Steadman in Alan Bennett's comic gem There’s a theatrical treat in store for Welsh audiences when Alison Steadman and David Troughton star in Alan Bennett’s rarely performed gem Enjoy. Having received rave reviews across the board, this dark comedy visits the New Theatre as part of a limited tour from Tuesday 30 September.

Without question one of the country’s favourite playwrights and greatest observers of the British way of life, Alan Bennett wrote Enjoy in 1980 and set it in his home town of Leeds. An ageing couple are living in the city’s last back-to-back and with the demolition of the area in progress, Wilf and Connie are soon to be re-housed in a brand new maisonette – with a waste disposal unit and non-slip vinyl flooring! When a sociologist comes to observe them in their daily life, normality takes a decidedly atypical turn…

Mam tries to show the ‘observer’ that they are acting completely normally, whilst doing anything but that. With no-one actually being who they are supposed to be, the play is exciting and unpredictable and laced with Bennett’s usual one-liners that have audiences both laughing out loud and gasping with shock.

Alison Steadman is one of our best-loved and most prolific actresses. On stage, she created the role of the monstrous Beverly in Mike Leigh’s Abigail’s Party, and starred in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, for which she won an Olivier Award. Her films include Shirley Valentine, Clockwise, A Private Function, Life is Sweet and Topsy Turvy. Her television work includes Fat Friends, Pride and Prejudice, Fanny Hill and of course, most recently her role as Pamela in Gavin & Stacey.

Alison is joined by one of the country’s most experienced classical actors David Troughton, whose numerous credits for the RSC and National Theatre range from Henry IV, Caliban and Bottom to Hook in Peter Pan. Television includes Casualty and Doctor Who. David comes from a famous family being the son of Doctor Who actor Patrick Troughton, elder brother of Michael Troughton, and father to Warwickshire cricketer Jim Troughton.

A household name for more than forty years, Alan Bennett’s numerous plays include The History Boys, a sell-out when it toured to the New Theatre in 2006, Habeas Corpus, Single Spies, Talking Heads, The Madness of George III and The Lady in the Van.

Enjoy is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Tuesday 30 September – Saturday 4 October. Tickets range from £7.50 - £26 and can booked via the Box Office on 029 2087 8889 or online* at www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk.
