Footloose at the New Theatre

Footloose at the New Theatre The explosive and energetic musical Footloose opens at the New Theatre from Monday 6 October bursting with classic 80s anthems, a dynamic young cast and electrifying dance routines. From the producers of Fame and Never Forget, Footloose was an instant hit in the West End and features an array of unforgettable songs including Let’s Hear it for the Boy, Holding Out for a Hero and of course the title track, Footloose.

Starring Maureen Nolan and Richard Grieve, this fast-paced show derives from a true story and is based on the popular 80s dance movie starring Kevin Bacon. A classic tale of teenage angst, Footloose reflects the mood and attitude of young people of the time.

It closely follows the original screenplay by Dean Pitchford about Ren, a free-spirited charismatic young man and his mother as they move from Chicago to small-town Bomont. Though he tries hard to fit in, the streetwise Ren can't quite believe he's living in a place where popular music and dancing are banned. Ariel, the beautiful rebellious daughter of the local minister, comes to his aid, despite her jealous boyfriend and strict father who has taken on responsibility for keeping the town dance-free. With Ariel’s help Ren has the courage to take on the town council and sets about arranging a dance.

A vibrant cast of 23 performers, a 5 piece band, a clever new set, stylish costumes and slick dance routines bring the score to life under the direction of Olivier Award winning choreographer Karen Bruce.

Leading the cast are Maureen Nolan and Richard Grieve. Perhaps best known for being a part of the famous band The Nolans, Maureen has appeared in several tours of Blood Brothers. She also starred in the comedy Mum’s the Word and Girls Behind. Richard Grieve is currently starring as Jonny Foster in Emmerdale and also played Dr Lachlan Frazer in Home and Away and Sam Kratz in Neighbours. They take the roles of Reverand Shaw and Vi Moore, the characters who clash with with Ren (played by Kevin Bacon in the film version).

Footloose is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Monday 6 – Saturday 11 October with Monday – Thursday performances at 7.30pm; Friday 5pm & 8.30pm; Saturday 4pm & 7.30pm. Tickets range from £9 - £31.50 and can booked via the Box Office on 029 2087 8889 or online
