Mid Wales Opera touring The Tales of Hoffman
|
Mid Wales Opera will be returning to the Pontardawe Arts Centre on Tuesday 21st October at 7.30pm. Following their widely acclaimed production of the ever-popular La Bohème in 2007, the company will be turning this year to one of the most original and fascinating nineteenth century operatic masterpieces, The Tales of Hoffmann by Offenbach.
Offenbach had been delighting audiences for three decades with his witty and tuneful operettas. Who then was this man, Hoffmann, who inspired Offenbach in his final years to write his first “serious” grand opera, a project which he was tragically unable to finish? Other masterpieces such as Delibes’ ballet Coppélia and Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker are also based on Hoffmann’s Tales. Offenbach made Hoffmann the central figure of the three Tales that he had selected for his opera, cleverly tailoring his melodic genius to their greater emotional range, and creating a flood of glorious tunes.
Once again MWO has chosen a cast with a suitable blend of youth and experience, all regular performers with the UK’s leading opera companies. Mid Wales Opera has an established reputation for productions which are original, ambitious, but certainly never boring. With its melodic and scenic magic, The Tales of Hoffmann contains all the ingredients for an enchanting and entertaining evening. We hope that you will be able to join us!
