![]() Have you ever read a book that changed your life? For the Volcano Theatre Company that book was W G Sebald’s ‘The Rings of Saturn’. The book became their obsession. They bought numerous copies of the work and insisted that their friends read it. They posted copies to their acquaintances, who concluded that they were mad. They mislaid their own copies and suspected each other of stealing them. They became fascinated with random objects, felt the need to go on long walks and began to invest even the smallest things with great significance. "In August 1992, when the dog days were drawing to an end, I set off to walk the county of Suffolk…." Although the journey described in ‘The Rings of Saturn’ covers only one small corner of England, the book is an adventure of memory and association that reaches across the globe and through hundreds of years of history. Every place and every object leads us somewhere else. From crumbling English seaside-resorts, we are transported deep into the Belgian Congo or the silk houses of a Chinese Empress. But the exotic charm of these journeys is always unsettled by some epic brutality just around the corner or below the surface, with the strange effect that the detached and scholarly prose rages with violence on every page. 10 years after the publication in English of ‘The Rings of Saturn’, Volcano Theatre Company invites you on an extraordinary journey in the writer's footsteps. This production does not however recount the story of Sebald’s novel, but rather the stories of four people who see the world differently having read Sebald’s work, and who witness the world through its pages. Supported by a touring grant from Arts Council England. On the 26th November, Volcano Theatre’s latest production i-witness will be performed at Aberystwyth Arts Centre. The performance will begin at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced £9 (£8) CC £8.50 (£7.50) Groups £7 and are available from Aberystwyth Arts Centre Box Office on 01970 62 32 32 or alternatively book online at www.aber.ac.uk/artscentre. |
