The Sacrifice devised by GYPT at The Melville Theatre, Abergavenny.

Senior members of Gwent Young People’s Theatre will use the theme of Andrei Tarkovsky’s award-winning film The Sacrifice as the basis for a devised work to be performed next Thursday and Friday, 4 and 5 December.
Tarkovsky, known for a series of films he completed during his relatively short life – including the better known Solaris - poses essential questions of spirituality in a world dominated by material things in The Sacrifice.
He strips the performers of materialism by placing them in the aftermath of an immense disaster where they are forced to unravel and reflect on their lives.
“In the beginning was the word…why is that papa?” says the young boy to his father.
In GYPT’s production, which is a devised movement piece, the group of young actors use photographs and mementoes of their own lives to explore the nature of their existence.
It is directed by Chris Durnall, assisted by Lisa Harris.
The Sacrifice was Tarkovsky’s final masterpiece which won the Grande prize at Cannes in 1986. He died in the same year at the age of 54.
The performance, at the Melville Theatre, in the Drama Centre, PenyPound, Abergavenny starts at 7.30pm. Tickets £6 and £4 obtainable from the Borough
Theatre box office, 01873 850805.
