Top Quality Spring Season at Sherman

This Spring Sherman presents an exciting programme of dance, drama and music from world class companies and artists, as well as their own production of a play set in 1950s Cardiff by a world renowned Welsh playwright.

Sherman Cymru builds on the fantastic success of 2008 by extending the life of two of its hit productions – the award-winning Deep Cut (following its sell out runs in both Edinburgh and Cardiff) will transfer to London’s Tricycle Theatre for a four week run in March. Yr Argae, Sherman Cymru’s sell out 2008 Eisteddfod production, returns to Sherman from 22 – 24 January before touring throughout Wales.

Sherman Cymru will produce a new production of Small Change by Welsh playwright Peter Gill from 20 March – 11 April. Set in 1950s Cardiff, Small Change is the story of two boys growing up on the East Side of Cardiff, whose lives later take them in different directions. Internationally recognised as one of Wales’s most foremost playwrights, Small Change will be a rare production in Peter Gill’s home city.

Sherman Cymru continue their tradition of promoting new talent this season with the monthly ScriptSlams, in which writers compete to win the audience vote, continuing from 14 January. New writing company Dirty Protest also return to Sherman to present The Bells of Shoreditch, a full length play from Tim Price on 15 -16 January.

The high quality drama continues with Clwyd Theatr Cymru’s Great Expectations on 19 – 21 March. A new adaptation by Tim Baker, Clwyd Theatr Cymru’s Associate Director, Great Expectations is one of Dickens’ finest and best loved novels.

Dance will also play a strong part in Sherman’s Spring season, kicking off with 3 Men Running on 27 January. Starring Wales’s Marc Rees, three men from three different cultures are joined together by a common experience: the recent death of their fathers. The international dance programme continues with Sound Affairs’ Boulevard of Broken Dreams on 25 February. Boulevard of Broken Dreams is an exciting new dance and live music collaboration between British composer, Charlie Barber, Brazilian-born choreographer, Jean Abreu and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama graduates, the Mavron Quartet.

Tanja Liedtke’s Twelfth Floor visits Sherman on 24 March. Directed by Liedtke before she was killed in a road accident in 2007, Twelfth Floor features performers from Australian Dance Theatre and DV8 Physical Theatre and was Winner of Outstanding Choreography in the Australian Dance Awards 2006.

Multi-award-winning Cardiff-based dance and physical theatre company, Earthfall, bring their latest work, Gravitas, to Sherman on 10 – 11 March. Using live music, film, humour and choreography, this is Earthfall at their most profound and cutting-edge. The dance programme is completed by Sylvain Emard Danse from Quebec on 13 March. Performed by five female dancers, Wave is energetic and moving beyond words.

Llandaff Musical Society return to Sherman with Calamity Jane, originally made famous by Doris Day in the 1954 film version, on 21 -24 January. Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama also present the roaring twenties musical Thoroughly Modern Millie on 13 - 21 February, along with Daisy Pulls It Off on 1 – 4 April.

For our younger audiences, internationally-acclaimed Travelling Light Theatre Company retell the classic story of The Ugly Duckling for ages 3 and over on 14 February.

Sherman Cymru’s award-winning Acting Out Cardiff collaborate with Welsh National Opera this Spring to create their own unique take on Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love. Sherman Cymru Youth Theatre also continue to create compelling theatre with a double bill of The Watching and Cult – A Study, two highly theatrical stories, on 26 – 28 February.

Comedy also features in this Spring’s programme with the return of Josie Long on 7 February after her hit show at Sherman in early 2008. Mock the Week regular Mark Watson also brings his new show to Sherman on 26 March.
