HIGH FLYING ACROBATICS WHEN THE CIRCUS COMES TO TOWN

HIGH FLYING ACROBATICS WHEN THE CIRCUS COMES TO TOWN Demonstrating extraordinary feats of human endurance and gravity defying leaps that come as close to flying as physically possible, the world famous Shaolin Wushu Warriors perform as part of the Chinese State Circus at the New Theatre from Friday 6 – Sunday 8 February.

The Chinese State Circus aims to bring Far East circus arts to European audiences and has been touring in the UK since 1992. Featuring only human performers, the circus is made up of seven different Chinese troupes, members of the Peking Opera and the Shaolin Warriors.

Cardiff audiences can expect to see breathtaking gymnastics, back-flipping acrobatics, unbelievable contortionists, beautiful plate spinning divas and sensual dances between high flying trapeze artists. Adults and children will be equally delighted with this exciting production of physical theatre with its variety of acts from across China.

One of the most famous characters in Chinese folklore, the Monkey King provides the show’s narrative and cleverly knits together the impressive circus acts with 2,000 years of China’s exotic cultural history.

Shaolin is a Zen based martial art that combines Buddhism with Kung-fu. The warrior monks are disciplined in pole top leaping dexterity, pressure-point/ nerve manipulation, and wall scaling techniques. They are considered the oldest and most renown kung-fu masters.

The 2009 tour celebrates last year’s Beijing Olympics with athletes who illustrate the amazing physical capabilities and flexibility of the human body in incredible displays of balancing and acrobatics that made them so successful at last summer’s Games.

Dramatic music and lusciously costumed performances in this high adrenaline production result in the smooth transition of a big top circus to a theatre setting. This jaw-dropping show is perfect for the whole family.

The Chinese State Circus is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Friday 6 – Sunday 8 February. Tickets range from £9 - £25 and can booked via the Box Office on 029 2087 8889 or online* at www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk.
