A Doll's House

A Doll's House Swansea-based Fluellen Theatre Company presents an astonishing masterpiece with its first major production of 2009, A DOLL`S HOUSE, which opens at the Grand Theatre Arts Wing on February 10th.

Henrik Ibsen’s play was written in 1879 and caused a sensation at its premiere, and we can still feel the shockwaves today.

Fluellen`s Artistic Director, Peter Richards, says, “ A play which re-appraises the role of women’s in both society and marriage may appear as dry as dust to some, but Ibsen writes with such passion about his flawed heroine and constructs such a nail-biting plot that is impossible not to be drawn in”.

The play tells the story of Nora and Torvald Helmer who have an apparently idyllic marriage with three beautiful children and financial security through Torvald`s new job. But Nora is hiding a terrifying secret which, if revealed, will have shattering consequences for her and her family.

“Nora’s solution to her plight was considered hugely shocking to contemporary audiences” adds Peter,” and, indeed, the original actress playing Nora refused to perform in the play unless the ending was changed. It wasn’t.”

Nora is no whiter-than-white heroine and, therefore, arguments about her continue to this day. Taking on the role of Nora, one of the most difficult female roles in theatre, is Jessica Sandry. The cast also includes Gavin Dando, David Dooley, Liza Ludbrook and Huw Richards.

Performances at the Grand Theatre Arts Wing are 10th – 12th February at 7.15pm with a matinee performance on Wednesday 11th at 2.00pm. Box Office 01792 475715. The production also visits De Valance, Tenby on 26th February. Box Office 01834 843568
