New Creative Associates for National Theatre Wales Announced today

New Creative Associates for National Theatre Wales Announced today National Theatre Wales is delighted to announce that Catherine Paskell and Mathilde López are the Creative Associates for the newly created English language theatre company, National Theatre Wales (NTW).

Catherine Paskell is a Director from Cardiff who has worked in various theatres including the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, Contact Theatre, Manchester and most recently, the Unity Theatre, Liverpool. Catherine is looking forward to her new role as Creative Associate for National Theatre Wales:

"As both a theatre director and a Welsh woman, I am extremely proud to be working with the NTW in forging a new direction for developing theatre across Wales. I am excited to be an integral part in creating a truly National Theatre, owned and shaped by the audiences and artists of Wales."

Mathilde López has international experience as a Theatre Director and Scenographer and has been working as the Literary Manager, Resident Director and Co-organiser of the IFEA (International Festival for emerging Artists) for the Theatre Royal Stratford East. Mathilde is delighted to be joining National Theatre Wales:

“I am honoured to be joining the National Theatre of Wales. I very much embrace its ambitious aspirations and I hope to be instrumental in generating a dynamic theatre that defines and retains its particular roots while it challenges forms and articulates national and international questions.”

The proposals for developing National Theatre Wales have been supported by the Welsh Assembly Government, which announced in October 2007 that it would make a major investment to establish the new theatre company, as part of an enhanced provision for English Language Theatre in Wales. The Arts Council of Wales was then charged with the responsibility of administering the development of the National Theatre.

The new company will not be building-based, giving it the freedom to commission and create new productions. NTW will work closely with the existing theatrical infrastructure in Wales to create high profile productions that will sometimes move outside the traditional theatre space.

John McGrath, the Artistic Director for NTW welcomed the two new additions to the team:

“We wanted to make a commitment at the very start of National Theatre Wales to an emerging generation of theatre makers. So following the first appointments of myself and producer Lucy Davies, we advertised for two Creative Associates to be part of NTW from the first day: to help shape our vision and develop the opening programme of work.

“As a company that intends to be proudly Welsh and boldly international, we are delighted that our first two creative associates are Catherine Paskell and Mathilde Lopez. Catherine is a young Welsh director of enormous talent and commitment who will, I’m sure, be instrumental in shaping Welsh theatre over the coming decades. Mathilde is an emerging international director and designer with a passion for Wales and its creativity, with an extraordinary creative understanding of the digital and virtual possibilities for theatre.

“Catherine and Mathilde have both been appointed full-time for two years; and I expect this commitment to emerging artists to continue in this form and in many other ways, for a long time to come.”

Catherine and Mathilde will begin their new posts with National Theatre Wales in March 2009.
