Celebrating the life and music of a legend

Celebrating the life and music of a legend 150,000 guitar strings since it first opened, the world’s most successful Rock ‘n’ Roll musical Buddy returns to Cardiff from Monday 30 March to Saturday 4 April. Seen by 20 million people worldwide this multi award-winning show is back on tour to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Buddy Holly’s tragic death in 1959.

Over the years, there have been numerous actors presented with the task of filling Buddy’s shoes on stage. “I love to come there and see the show,” says Buddy’s widow Maria Elena. “Each Buddy has done a tremendous job in the way they portray him – I’m sure Buddy would’ve approved.”

With the approaching 50th Anniversary, 2009 also marks the 20th year for the show. Keeping the music alive is something not lost on Maria Elena. “I hope the younger people, the aspiring musicians, will take the tenacity, the dedication that he had for his music and that he never gave up,” she says of the show.

Fifty years is a long time in anyone’s life, let alone to be apart from your first true love. “To me, it doesn’t seem like 50 years since he’s been gone,” reflects Maria Elena. “To me, he’s still around – not in person of course, but he’s here.”

With over a dozen major awards and nominations behind it including an Olivier and a Tony, Buddy tells the story of the three years in which he became the world’s top recording artist. The show features his greatest hits including Peggy Sue, That’ll Be the Day, Oh Boy, Heartbeat as well as classics such as La Bamba and Chantilly Lace.

Buddy follows the tragically short life of the star from his first recording contract through to his move to New York, concluding with his fatal tour of Midwest America with Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. Buddy sings his way from the recording studio in Nashville, Tennessee to Harlem’s Apollo Theatre, culminating in a live rock ‘n’ roll extravaganza at the ‘Winter Dance Party’ finale.

Buddy is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Monday 30 March – Saturday 4 April. Tickets are £8 and £30 and can booked via the Box Office on 029 2087 8889 or online* at www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk.
