Contemporary Twist on Controversial Classic

Contemporary Twist on Controversial Classic Royal Welsh College of Music Drama present a controversial adaptation of John Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi at Sherman, Cardiff from Friday 22 – Saturday 30 May.

John Webster’s dark and violent tragedy recounts a bloody and brutal tale of incest, corruption, political intrigue and murder when a Duchess defies her brothers by marrying her servant. Generally considered to be Webster's masterpiece, The Duchess of Malfi is based on a true story set in Italy and was first performed in 1614 at The Globe Theatre in London. The play’s dark and brutal nature lends itself to Martin Houghton’s style of directing who has previously directed Macbeth and Women Beware Women at Sherman. Houghton comments:

“We are giving a contemporary feel to a timeless classic and aiming to re-create the level of controversy that it would have had originally, so that the audience will feel the impact of what the writer was trying to achieve at the time. Jacobean drama is a bit like a soap opera as they have a wonderful way of telling a story and leave you wanting more at the end of every scene.”

In their final year of study, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Acting students take part in five productions, before taking their first steps into the professional world of acting. Recent graduates that have gone on to achieve success include Aneurin Barnard, currently appearing in the lead role in Spring Awakening on the West End, and Kimberley Nixon who recently starred alongside Judi Dench in BBC One’s period drama Cranford.

The Duchess of Malfi is on at Sherman from 22 – 30 May. Tickets are £8, Reductions £6 (15% VAT rate will be applied when booking) and can be booked from Sherman’s Box Office on 029 2064 6900 or online at www.shermancymru.co.uk (No booking fee) The Duchess of Malfi will contain scenes of a violent nature and is not suitable for Under 16s.
