Sherman Cymru Youth Theatre Make Kontakt with Older Generation |
![]() Kontakt began life last June at Sherman as a new production and after an incredible success, the model being adopted by Birmingham Rep Youth Theatre and the Arcola Youth Theatre. Kontakt2 is now being performed with Sherman Cymru Youth Theatre members together with Welsh speaking Theatre students from the Atrium, University of Glamorgan in this new bilingual production. Youth Theatre Director Phil Mackenzie comments: "The central idea behind the performance is getting different generations to have contact with one another in a safe and comfortable environment. How often does an adult sit across from a table with a 15 year old and have a meaningful interaction or conversation? It's a fascinating project for both the young people and the audience -the cast are not playing characters, there is no script and each performance is very different. It really stretches the boundaries of what theatre is and could be in an ever-changing world" 50 young people aged between 12 - 24, each sit a card table lit by a single light bulb and a chair opposite. Each audience member is invited to participate in a series of unique verbal and non verbal encounters. Youth Theatre director Phil Mackenzie continues: "I'd love to take the idea even further - get young people having similar one to one interactions with politicans, refugees, asylum seekers - how great would that be? The possibilites are endless". Sherman Cymru Youth Theatre currently offers 100 young people the opportunity to create theatre and develop performance and confidence skills. The Youth Theatre produced three high quality productions a year. Past productions have included Gospel, Bob’s Dance Hall and Dam Dogs. Kontakt2 is on at Sherman on 29 May – 6 June 7pm and 8.30pm (see Sherman website for full schedule). Tickets are £7 (Reductions £5) and can be booked from Sherman’s Box Office on 029 2064 6900 or online at www.shermancymru.co.uk. Please note tickets are limited. |
