COMMUNITY PLAY, EBBW VALE 2010 – PHASE ONE IGNITING THE FLAME: FFLACH/FLASH |
![]() The site of the 2010 Eisteddfod was one of the focal points of the industrial revolution with world-famous iron-works, a massive local coal industry and the site of the biggest steelworks in the world. The “new technology” and furnaces of these valleys provided the fuel for progress across the developed world. The area has also acted as a crucible for forging ideas and played a leading role in the development of the Chartist movement and the National Health Service.. The people of the Heads of the Valleys are accustomed to change and adapting themselves to the times. Now, this area is shaking off its industrial past and reinventing itself, starting with a garden festival and now through widespread regeneration schemes. Phase One is the research and development stage of the project and will involve the appointment of a freelance researcher/animateur to lay down the foundations on which to build the Ebbw Vale community performance and develop material that could also feed into the “Cauldrons and Furnaces” theme of the Cultural Olympiad in 2012. Although this is described as one artist, applications offering a team approach with two artists offering complementary skills will be welcomed. Duration of Phase One: July to December 2009. There will be an open-tender procedure for the commission. Fee...........................................................£15,000 (inclusive of travel and VAT, if applicable) The commission includes: 1. Researching local stories that demonstrate the flame of innovation – where the inspiration of someone from the Eastern Valleys has taken them on a journey of discovery that has impacted on the world around them. These can be big significant well-known stories or more local small-scale journeys drawn from someone’s family history. 2. The development of thematic material around transformation, drawing on the area’s industrial heritage and its ability to reinvent itself. 3. Working with 8 local community groups and schools in each of the four counties to unearth the stories and help reinterpret these through creative writing, songs and drama. 4. Developing bilingual material that will form the basis of the community play script and songs (to be further developed in the production phase of this project). 5. Liaising with the Head for Arts team to raise community interest in participating in this project and encouraging people to take part in the performance and engage with the Ebbw Vale Eisteddfod. 7. To communicate emerging themes with other artists working on Head for Arts’ projects to facilitate the development of modular work 9. Working with the Head for Arts team to give small-scale sharings of the work in progress (eg. local exhibitions/performances of work developed by a community group) The commissioned artist (or team) - must demonstrate an ability to work with both English and Welsh speaking groups and be enthusiastic about bilingual working practises. - should have experience in developing creative writing/drama or song writing in a community context - must have excellent communication skills, a willingness to work with “difficult to reach” groups and the ability to engage new participants in the project. - should have a lively interest in local history and legends - must have a current CRB certificate The artist(s) will be responsible to the Project Manager and a small materials budget will be available.
