Two for the Price of One at Sherman this summer!

A Vision of heaven, a maths lesson from your worst nightmare and a dancing teapot – a night of hugely contrasting emotions and all for the price of one visit to the theatre.

Once again the Royal Welsh College brings all its talents together for the highlight of their summer programme, a spectacular double bill, two one-act operas, at Sherman in July.

‘Two of my favourite twentieth century operas,’ enthuses Director Stuart Barker, ‘both with ravishing scores but two completely contrasting pieces. I don’t want to give anything away about the production, but suffice to say we have more than risen to the challenge of producing two such different operas on the one night!’

Puccini’s Suor Angelica is a deeply moving tale of loss and repentance set in 17th century Italy. Sung in Italian it tells the story of Angelica, banished to a convent after bearing an illegitimate child. She learns years later that the child has died, takes poison and as she dies she prays for forgiveness. Will she be reunited with her child in heaven or will she have to bear the consequence of her sin of suicide for all eternity?

In total contrast, Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges, sung in English, is a light-hearted, warm and zany comedy. A mischievous child, bored with his lessons, starts to misbehave, smashing tea-cups, tormenting pets and generally throwing tantrums. To his surprise and alarm, everything in his room comes to life to reprimand him and ensure that he learns a lesson he’ll never forget.
