One of the West End’s biggest comedy hits is about to take Cardiff by storm as Alan Ayckbourn’s Absurd Person Singular visits the New Theatre from Tuesday 6 – Saturday 10 October.A classic comedy with outrageous characters, Absurd Person Singular follows three couples in their attempts to out-do each other in the Christmas party stakes. Firstly it’s the turn of the Hopcrofts and the only present they want is to succeed in scaling the social ladder. Havoc ensues at the drinks party they hold to impress their high-powered friends – but that’s nothing compared to what happens over the next two years when the friends return their hospitality! Absurd Person Singular features an all-star cast including Lisa Kay, best known for her current lead role as Nurse Carol Cassidy in ITV1’s Heartbeat, Elizabeth Carling, well known for her lead performances in Casualty and Goodnight Sweetheart, Matthew Cottle (Game On), Stephen Beckett (Coronation Street, The Bill), Deborah Grant (Not Going Out, Bergerac) and Robert Duncan, from the Channel 4 cult comedy classic Drop the Dead Donkey. Alan Ayckbourn is one of the country’s most regularly performed living playwrights. Among his other successes are The Norman Conquests, Bedroom Farce and A Chorus of Disapproval. His plays have won numerous awards including seven London Evening Standard awards. Alan was appointed a CBE in 1987 and in 1997 he became the first playwright to be knighted since Terence Rattigan. This production of Absurd Person Singular was first staged in the West End in 2008 where it received glowing reviews and now visits Cardiff as part of a major UK tour.
