Etiquette arrives in Wales for the first time
|
Cast away theatrical convention and experience a performance with a difference as Etiquette comes to Wales Millennium Centre this November.
Etiquette is a half-hour experience for two people that is staged in a public space such as a cafe or a bar. The pair become both performer and spectator, with no-one else around them aware of the theatre that's taking place.
Directed by a voice heard through a set of headphones, the two taking part are told what to say to each other or to use one of the props that are provided. Etiquette is best done with someone that you already know, but if you're feeling brave you can do it with a stranger too.
"gripping... If the line between audience and performer seems blurred, Rotozaza's Etiquette erases it entirely."
New York Times/Herald Tribune
Etiquette explores the gap between language and meaning. In creating an entirely
private space in a public setting, something extraordinary happens.
Lyn Gardner, The Guardian
This is a magical, unthreatening experience, the act of relinquishing responsibility for thought,
word and action is unique and the effect is unmissable.British Theatre Guide
Etiquette examines communication at its most fundamental level. It explores what happens when someone speaks without having to plan what to say. As such it is an unpredictable piece that puts a new twist on the way we usually communicate with one another.
Already a success in New York and Edinburgh, Etiquette has been translated into several languages including French, Japanese, Polish and ,Slovene. Now, Wales Millennium Centre brings it to Wales, and makes the experience available in the Welsh language for the first time, with the Centre itself having translated the script.
The Centre's Bar One and Crema coffee shop provide the setting for this unique theatre experience, as boundary-pushing theatre company Rotozaza invite each pair to watch and take part.
