![]() Pericles first desires the daughter of King Antiochus. As a test, before marrying her, he must answer a riddle or lose his life. Pericles passes the test, but learns that the Princess is living incestuously with her father. Horrified, Pericles returns home, and as penance takes ship for Tharsus, city of Cleon and Dionyza. There he relieves a famine, but reminded of his guilt, goes to sea and is shipwrecked on the coast of Pentapolis....
