Welsh language adaptation of Harold Pinter’s play The Caretaker will appear at Pontardawe Arts Centre |
![]() It was the first of Pinter’s plays to receive significant commercial success as well as national recognition. It was an immediate hit and received favourable reviews. Over the years, the play has continued to attract audiences. It has been adapted to both film and television, as well as being performed all over the world. Elis Gwyn’s translation was performed back in the 1970s by Cwmni Theatr Cymru and received much praise. Pinter died in December 2008, and it is therefore apt that Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru produce Y Gofalwr in his memory. Following the story of two brothers and a tramp, Y Gofalwr deals with the distance between reality and fantasy, family relationships and their struggle for power. The playwright uses elements of comedy and tragedy to deal with subjects such as mental illness and the condition / fate of those in need. The complexity of the play, Pinter’s masterful use of dialogue, and the depth and perception of his themes, all contribute to The Caretaker’s consideration as a modern masterpiece. Tickets cost £9, £7 concessions, £5 students and £1 children (ages 12 - 16 suggested. Up to two per paying adult).
