London College of Music Examinations: Special Option for Drama & Communication Awards |
London College of Music Examinations is pleased to announce a newopportunity for speakers of a language other than English to present an examination piece in their own language. Available for Acting, Speech & Drama and Verse Speaking exams from September 2010 onwards, the Special Option aims to allow candidates to display their performance skills in a language where they have great personal familiarity and sense of ownership – most often the mother tongue. This should allow for spontaneity and a living quality that are more difficult in a second language, and should offer a great chance to enjoy the chosen piece to the fullest, and to connect closely with the words, ideas and feelings. The Special Option is part of a move towards a clearer recognition of theatrical and literary cultures other than the mainstream and classic English-language examples, and recognises the increasing diversity of candidates entering for LCM Examinations across our growing international network of exam centres. While the Option is for one item within exams conducted in English, it is a first step towards a new vision of opportunities for a major LCM Exams constituency. Relevance to Wales The Special Option can be considered for incorporation into the Curriculum Cymreig, where two of the core aims are: ‘an awareness of the importance of language and literature in the history and life of Wales’ and ‘an understanding of the creative and expressive arts in Wales.’ Exploratory discussions with potential teachers of the option in Wales have yielded comments such as ‘refreshingly innovative.’ Centres training for theatre, and for board examinations in drama, will also find working in Welsh a rewarding opportunity.
