![]() Wales Millennium Centre today unveiled a series of free events aimed to help introduce newcomers to dance. The events will take place throughout the year and aim to explain dance for people who worry that they don’t know much about it and are not really sure whether they would enjoy dance performances. Dance has never been more popular judging by the TV schedules with shows such as Strictly Come Dancing, So You Think You Can Dance and Got to Dance. But when it comes to attending a dance performance, many people continue to be put off. They are not sure what it’s about, what show to choose, find it intimidating or simply worry that they won’t understand it. Now Wales Millennium Centre aims to help audiences discover dance through a series of Insight Events. The Centre believes that by helping the audience get a little closer to the creative process, and get to hear about how dance shows are created from the people who create them, they will be more likely to want to see the finished show. This is also the reason why these events are all free. Tickets must be reserved in advance through the Ticket Office on 08700 40 2000. The Insight Events will kick off on Thursday 11 February 2010 with a talk by Richard Winsor. He is best known for dancing the lead in Matthew Bourne’s version of Swan Lake, part of which was performed by the remaining four boys on last Saturday’s So You Think You Can Dance. Richard will talk about how he researches each role, how he tells stories through dance and how it was seeing Bourne’s all-male version of Swan Lake as a boy that inspired him to want to become a dancer. Other highlights include: • Welsh choreographer Cai Thomas will demonstrate how dancers and choreographers work together to create a brand new piece of work; • Martin Hunt – the Centre’s own Technical Director who worked on the very first production of Matthew Bourne’s now iconic Swan Lake at Sadler’s Wells. Hear about the technical creation and some behind the scenes anecdotes; • Nick Allen currently works as Clinical Director for Birmingham Royal Ballet’s medical team, the Jerwood Centre. He previously worked with Gloucester Rugby and the England Hockey team. Nick will give an insight into the stresses and strains that dance can have on the human body; and • Finish off your working day by taking part in a Commuter Class with professional dancers. Join dancers from Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, the cast of Hairspray and the professional dancers from Strictly Come Dancing for a bit of fun and a boogie straight after work. Wales Millennium Centre’s Artistic Director, Fiona Allan said: ‘At the Centre we are passionate about dance. We have a reputation for being one of the best stages for dance and have showcased some of the very best of International dance companies in Wales. We want to share our enthusiasm with people who might not think that they will enjoy or understand dance through these free events and give people a broader level of experience of dance.’ Further details on the free Insight Events and the Dance programme can be found here www.wmc.org.uk/dance10.
