Weston Studio gets a spring clean for 2010
|
Wales Millennium Centre promises audiences at its intimate theatre venue, the Weston Studio, a raft of productions that are "refreshing, surprising and fun" as it unveils its spring season today.
Highlights for March - May 2010 include:
Acclaimed Irish Dancers Suzanne Clearly and Cardiff-born Peter Harding turn traditional Irish dancing on its head with Up & Over It. Influenced by hip-hop, contemporary dance and electro pop, this is as far removed from Riverdance as you can imagine. [4 March 2010];
Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru presents its tribute to the late Harold Pinter with Y Gofalwr ? a Welsh-language version of his great play, The Caretaker, translated by Elis Gwyn. As part of its commitment and support for the Welsh-language, the Centre will be holding a free workshop for Welsh-learners alongside the performance. The workshop will include a tour of the building, synopsis of the play and a question and answer session with the cast and crew after the performance. [12-13 March 2010];
Students from both the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and Trinity University College will perform at the Weston Studio this spring. Known for producing many talented performers over the years, glimpse the stars of the future as The Royal Welsh College present a new, devised piece based on the work of composer Benjamin Britten ? Britten?s Women [25-27 March 2010] . Students from Ysgol Theatr, Cerdd a?r Cyfryngau at Trinity University College will perform a new musical written by Eilir Owen-Griffiths and Ceri Elen. Heb ei Fai follows the lives of Cardiff?s Tiger Bay residents in 1910. [29-30 March 2010];
Pappy?s: World Record Attempt: 200 Sketches in an Hour. Ben, Matthew and Tom are a comedy trio who will entertain you with a full night of sketches, songs and a chance to see them attempt the impossible. [31 March 2010];
Showstopper! is an improvised musical that is created from scratch each performance. Based on ideas and suggestions from the audience, the writer and an all-singing, all-dancing cast create a hit musical in front of your very eyes. [3 April 2010]
Inspired by the likes of Edgar Allen Poe and Alfred Hitchcock, Ernest and the Pale Moon is a noir horror which blends live music, design and physical storytelling. Brought to you by Les Enfants Terribles and Pins & Needles, this is clever, compelling, edge-of-your-seats stuff [16-17 April 2010]; and
This spring we have plenty of shows for young audiences including:
o My Shadows and Me ? is a form of dance theatre that will transport young audiences between four and ten years, together with ?imaginary friends? to a fantastical world through live performance and filmed animations [18 April 2010 and includes a Family Dance Workshop for ticket holders]; and
o Funny Bones - will open up a new world of dance and movement for children aged five upwards and their families. With costumes adorned with plastic forks and buckets full of water, Funny Bones is an interactive piece that will intrigue audiences [3 May 2010].
