Having a Whale of a time raising funds for the Swansea Women’s Centre. Third year performing arts students at Swansea Metropolitan University are raising awareness of the Swansea Women’s Centre with their performance of Anthony Minghella’s Whale Music on March 19th.

The Women’s Centre provide informal and formal learning opportunities, woman-related resources and information, short-term support and sign-posting in a safe, supportive women-only environment. They have helped the all female cast with research material for the play and have been very supportive of the project.

The performance at the Townhill Campus will be followed by a fundraising event at 8:30pm in the Metro Bar, next to the theatre, to raise much needed money for the Centre. Students will be singing and there will be a fundraising raffle.

Carina Newman, the Director of Whale Music said, ‘The Swansea Women’s Centre provide invaluable support to women in the local community. They are inspiring ladies and we wanted to do something that would raise both awareness of what they do and some much needed money’.

Written by Oscar winning film director Anthony Minghella (The Talented Mr Ripley, The English Patient, Cold Mountain), Whale Music is a piece of theatre that celebrates the strength of a group of women joining together and explores the attitudes of women today.

The performance starts at 7:30pm on March 19th, 2010. Tickets are available from Beth Jones at the Townhill Theatre Box Office, beth.jones1@smu.ac.uk or 01792 482 054.
