WELSH DEBUT FOR RENOWNED DANCER CARLOS ACOSTA AND BALLET NACIONAL DE CUBA

WELSH DEBUT FOR RENOWNED DANCER CARLOS ACOSTA AND BALLET NACIONAL DE CUBA

Cuban-born dancing sensation, Carlos Acosta, will make his Welsh debut this May in a special guest appearance at Wales Millennium Centre as part of Ballet Nacional de Cuba’s first visit to Wales.

Hailed as ballet’s next major star, the thirty-six year old dancer has been wowing audiences across the world and demand for tickets to see Carlos Acosta perform at the Centre is very high.

Carlos Acosta began his dancing career when his father enrolled him at the Ballet Nacional de Cuba school with the aim of keeping him off the streets and instilling some discipline in his youngest son. At the school he trained under legendary Cuban ballet dancer Alicia Alonso.

Since then he has performed across the world dancing with many companies including Ballet Nacional de Cuba, American Ballet Theatre and The Royal Ballet, where he is the company’s Principal Guest Artist. In 2007, Carlos Acosta was nominated for an Olivier award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance.

Acosta will take to Wales Millennium Centre’s stage for one night only [5 May 2010] during Ballet Nacional de Cuba’s Magia de la Danza programme.

Magia de la Danza showcases extracts from seven of the company's most well-known ballets including Coppelia, The Nutcracker and Swan Lake. It will be performed at the Centre for two nights on 5 and 6 May 2010.

Ballet Nacional de Cuba will also perform the full length ballet Giselle on 7 and 8 May 2010. This is an emotionally charged tale of a peasant girl who falls for a nobleman. Giselle is a spell-binding ballet that shifts between mystical and earthier passages.

Ballet Nacional de Cuba was established by Alicia Alonso in 1948 and is regarded internationally as being one of the world’s leading ballet companies, renowned for bringing classical ballets to life with characteristic Cuban passion. Now in her nineties, Alonso still tours with her company.

Louise Miles-Crust, Wales Millennium Centre’s Artistic Programme Manager said: ‘Wales Millennium Centre is committed to bringing the best of international dance to Wales.

‘We are very fortunate that Carlos Acosta, one of the most exciting dancers of his generation will be making his Welsh debut at the Centre alongside one of the very best dance companies in the world. These are two fantastic dance treats for Welsh audiences. ’

Carlos Acosta will perform with the company as part of Magia de la Danza on Wednesday 5 May 2010

Alicia Alonso, Artistic Director of Ballet Nacional de Cuba, will give a post-show talk on Wednesday 5 May 2010

Ballet Nacional de Cuba will perform Magia de la Danza on 5 and 6 May 2010 and Giselle on 7 and 8 May 2010
