Arts at the Heart of the Nation

Arts at the Heart of the Nation A conference to discuss the performing arts in Wales was held at Theatr Powys, Llandrindod Wells on Wednesday 3rd March. Jointly hosted by WAPA (Wales Association of Performing Arts) who represent the producing arts companies and Creu Cymru who represent the theatres and arts centres, its purpose was to explore how to deliver more performances and theatre related arts activities to communities throughout the whole of Wales through collaboration and sharing resources.

The companies, theatres and arts centres are passionate about the power of the arts to change lives and believe that Wales as a nation defines itself to the world by the vibrancy and diversity of its culture.

Communication and collaboration was at the heart of the day and delegates spoke passionately about audiences being at the heart of what we do and the need to engage them in places which may not be part of the normal performing arts scene – whether that is pubs, clubs or the local chip shop. A wide ranging open discussion included the need to be able to offer a clear career path to enable people to remain in Wales to work.

An afternoon speed-dating session enabled producing companies and producing and presenting venues to discuss each others’ programmes of work in intense 15 minute one-to-one sessions. This was a chance for some to make contact for the first time, for others to explore new ways of working with long term partners. The buzz the conference generated was palpable and very different from the usual conference talking shop full of power point presentations.

A steering group will take ideas forward and continue to work to develop joint ideas and initiatives.

The day clearly demonstrated there are a huge amount of people within the arts who are committed to creating and presenting vibrant, dynamic productions and projects across the whole of Wales.
