WALES MILLENNIUM CENTRE STAFF ARE THE STARS AND AWARDED THEIR ‘OSCAR’ |
![]() The Centre, which opened in 2004 and has 400 full, part-time and casual employees, has just completed a notable double by achieving the Investors in People (IIP) standard and the associated Leadership and Management Model. IIP aims to improve the way in which organisations manage and develop their people, leading to business improvement and better public services. Congratulating staff on their achievement, Lesley Griffiths, Deputy Minister for Science, Innovation and Skills, presented the Award and described it as the Centre’s Oscar. “The Millennium Centre is first and foremost a people business. From front of house staff to those on the back stage, from safety and security personnel to the top leadership team. It gives me great pleasure that today it is the people responsible for running this amazing facility and building, who have earned their place in the spotlight today. This is your ‘Oscar’! “The Millennium Centre joins nearly 1700 Welsh businesses and organisations which have achieved IiP recognition. I am thrilled that a recent independent review of IIP services in Wales found satisfaction levels with our services in the upper 90% range. “Both the Investors in People and the Leadership and Management Model awards highlight the merits of everyone who is associated with, or who works at Wales Millennium Centre. It is you that makes this business special.” Jeremy Ashdown, the Centre’s People and Learning manager said the centre had received a number of architectural and construction awards for the iconic building, including ISO14001 and TMA Most Welcoming Theatre. “ However, both the Investors in People and the Leadership and Management Model are down to the people who work at Wales Millennium Centre and that is what makes them special,” said “Whilst the building is iconic, it’s the people that bring it to life and they are undoubtedly our biggest asset.” Wales Millennium Centre’s vision is to be an internationally significant cultural landmark and centre for the performing arts, renowned for inspiration, creativity, excellence and leadership. Apart from a wide range of high calibre stage performances, the Centre offers art exhibitions, workshops, training days, daily foyer performances, guided tours, bars and restaurants. It is also Wales’ No 1 tourist attraction. Last year more than 1.5 million people came through its doors. Mr Ashdown, who joined the Centre in 2008, said the company’s mission was to develop staff to fulfil their potential in line with corporate, departmental and personal goals. Each member of staff had a personal development review to discuss their development needs and career aspirations. “As a result of going through the IIP process people have been able to see how everything and everybody connects together in the business,” he added. “Staff turnover has reduced, the culture has changed, customer service has improved and an independent staff survey revealed that 94 per cent of staff were proud to work for the Centre”. “Some people view the Centre as just a theatre, but it is far more than that. It is both a unique and complex and organisation open 7 days per week with a number of departments. We have fantastic staff and, as an innovative company working in partnership with our resident and retail organisations, we have far exceeded our expectations in just five years”. “Art, innovation and creativity literally goes behind the scenes and flows through all of our staff, our policies and procedures. As a learning organisation, our challenge is to continue to attract and develop new staff through recruitment, internship, work experience and apprenticeship schemes and to offer career pathways, meeting and exceeding the career expectations of our staff”. |
