Success Breeds Success!

Success Breeds Success! Swansea Bay based male dance company, DYNION, has proved to be so successful that the Arts Council of Wales has selected the Company to receive special funding to pilot a year long project which will see them create a Professional Male Contemporary Dance ‘arm’, which will be based at the City’s Grand Theatre.

The Grand Theatre, owned, managed and financed by the City and County of Swansea, will support the company by providing rehearsal space plus professional assistance including Stage, Lighting, Marketing expertise and administrative support during the year long project.

Dynion’s existing Community Company has now become MEIBION and professionally trained dancers will start to be auditioned for the new Company in May.

Thanks to Dynion’s parent company, TAN Dance, receiving a Beacon Award from the Arts Council of Wales, the company is sharing out their good fortune by offering men and boys the chance to work with the company at the Men @ Work Physical Theatre Classes to be held on Wednesday evenings at Swansea Grand Theatre starting on April 21st.

Tan Dance Artistic Director, Carol Brown commented “This is the only professional male dance company in Wales… and it’s on our doorstep! We will ensure that everyone is welcome and that all levels will be able to enjoy these sessions which are to be based on natural movement. No previous dance experience is necessary. The classes will act as a springboard into the Meibion Company and, maybe, as has happened for several ex-Dynion members, a future in the professional dance theatre world”.

DYNION has successfully taken local young men around the UK, Europe, Africa and Asia Minor with Dance productions that speak to young people everywhere and the Company has won both awards and media attention.

Head of Culture & Tourism for the City & County of Swansea, Iwan Davies added. “This is another exciting and innovative project to happen at Swansea Grand Theatre. Since we created the theatre’s Arts Wing space, we have been able to support quite a number of Arts based projects and companies, and this new joint project with MEIBION takes us to another level, with support from Arts Council of Wales and the City & County of Swansea. Everyone will all be working towards achieving the success that this project promises”.

The classes will be taught by Creative Wales Award winner and Dynion Director, Douglas Comley, members of the company and guest teachers.
