RARE PERFORMANCE OF SHAKESPEARE’S BRUTAL POEM
|
Following a 5-star winning run at the Edinburgh Fringe two years ago and its subsequent sell-out performances in London, Olivier award nominee and RSC actor Gerard Logan brings his tour-de-force solo performance of Shakespeare's brilliant, brutal narrative poem, The Rape of Lucrece, to the Torch Theatre next week [Wednesday 5 May].
“The Rape of Lucrece is such a brilliant narrative poem – but no-one seemed to have thought of performing it as a one man piece” reflects Gerard on what motivated director Gareth Armstrong and himself to put the piece into performance. “We wanted to give audiences a fresh sense of the magic and power of the spoken word and a new impression of the greatest theatre wizard who ever lived.”
As ever, Shakespeare goes beyond the obvious, giving an account of the terrible crime of rape yet following the ramifications of the crime, shining a light on a band of human-behavior which transgresses the most basic decencies. Simple and stark with just a single actor and a bare stage, rapist and victim spring to searing life. This powerful tale is totally engrossing.
“You will rarely have the chance to experience great poetry brought to life – especially by such an accomplished storyteller” enthused the Torch’s Youth and Education Officer, Dave Ainsworth.
William Shakespeare’s The Rape of Lucrece can be seen at Milford Haven’s Torch Theatre on Wednesday 5 May. Tickets may be reserved by calling the Theatre Box Office on 01646 695267 or online at www.torchtheatre.co.uk where you can also take a look at a preview of the performance and interview with the performer, Gerard Logan.
