![]() The three works are being presented under the umbrella title RENDITIONS: “We chose the title because each dance is the signature of each one of those artists,” comments Candoco’s co-artistic director, Pedro Machado. “It’s their version, or ‘rendition’, of Candoco that audiences will be seeing.” In an honest and down-to-earth manner, Wendy gets us to consider the purpose that movement has in society; her witty, insightful observations are communicated and expressed through Candoco’s contagious physical performance style and with humour. Underlying Wendy’s work is her lifelong engagement with movement practice and a belief in the body. Although her current work involves more and more language, the language is entirely relevant to a physical experience. While her work challenges preconceptions about movement, her message is clear, her communication amusing, her vision of our culture uniquely interpreted and always incisive…something that fits perfectly with Candoco’s artistic vision. Emanuel Gat’s intricate sextet is built as a single sequence of movement, with dancers relaying a continuous role that evolves and unfolds in duets, trios or solos. This is a relentless piece that exposes the dancers’ refined musicality, and delights with its detailed and exquisite movement. Emanuel Gat crafts his choreography with dexterity and talent as apparent in his salsa style Rite of Spring for the 2007 Woking Dance Festival, and in his recent productions at the Sadler’s Wells’ Debut series and the prestigious Montpellier Dance Festival. He produces rich and rewarding choreography with intricate articulation and a beautiful movement style. In his working processes he allows dancers to generate movement material they are happy with, then guides them into refining their performances. Inspired by her Swan Lake for Transitions Dance Company, Candoco approached three times winner of the New York Bessie Dance Awards, Sarah Michelson, to make a piece for the company. Sarah’s style draws on the traditions and conventions of modern dance-making yet adds a fresh, often unpredictable take. Set against a symphonic original sound score this is Candoco as you’ve never seen them before. A choreographer who is determined to ask questions and engage with the time she lives in, Sarah believes in engaging and empowering performers through her work while probing dance’s status quo. She thinks in grand scale even for small projects and is interested in people without being sentimental. Her approach sits well with ambitions for Candoco as someone who is truly contemporary and not afraid to ask questions. Tickets for Candoco are priced £11, £13 with reductions and group prices available. To see more of what Candoco do, visit www.candoco.co.uk where you can watch videos and company blogs.
