BRILLIANCE OF BURTON AT THE MELVILLE, ABERGAVENNY
|
BURTON vividly presents the life of the great Welsh actor in his own words from humble beginnings to Hollywood mega-stardom.
This 5-star acclaimed one-man show is at The Melville Theatre in the Drama Centre, Penypound, Abergavenny on Friday 14 May 2010.
Beautiful women (not least Liz Taylor), alcohol, wealth, stage and screen are the threads woven into this sad, happy, exuberant and often hilarious performance from Rhodri Miles (Eastern Promises, Torchwood and Holby City)
Drink was the only real anodyne to his deteriorating health and mental state, his doomed tempestuous relationship with Taylor and his constant guilt over the abandonment of his family.
Rhodri Miles takes on the role of the younger Burton fresh from a successful run to critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2009 which received glorious 4 and 5 star reviews.
“I’ve always wanted to play Richard Burton” said R, who is in his late thirties and was born in Pontarddulais, just six miles away from Burton’s birthplace.
“He was a great thespian actor, an alcoholic womaniser who often said that his natural disposition to the Celtic gloom was caused by the mist in the hills and the black in the coal, all of it seeping into his very being. When you think of Welsh iconic figures, he’s one of them”
Rhodri trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and recently got the part of the senior Police officer in David Cronenberg’s movie ‘Eastern Promises’ and amongst his other credits are Holby City and Torchwood. He also played Dylan Thomas to critical acclaim at the fringe in 2007 in Gwynne Edwards’ play “Dylan Thomas in London ” and is about to play Thomas again in Gwynne Edward’ new one-man play ‘Dylan Thomas – The Clown in the Moon’
Edwards is also the author of this latest work, vividly depicting Burton’s often hilarious, melancholic, self-deprecating take on life.
