![]() In ‘the performance of a lifetime’ [The Guardian], actor Bob Golding hurtles through the triumphs and tribulations in the life of 1971’s Pipe Smoker Of The Year in an affectionate and entertaining theatrical tribute to Eric Morecambe which made its knockout debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last year, winning the prestigious Scotsman Fringe First Award for ‘innovation and outstanding new writing’, two Olivier Award nominations and picking up glowing tributes from many celebrities – several of whom had known or formerly worked with Eric himself. From his humble beginnings as a lad from Lancashire singing for pies and peas, through the giddy heyday of variety and summer season, to his rightful status as a national treasure in the hearts of almost thirty million TV viewers, the play also examines Eric’s relationship with his ambitious mother, his struggles with ill-health and how his partnership with Ernie survived the long arduous road to fame and fortune. Morecambe can be seen at the Torch Theatre on Wednesday 2 June. Tickets may be reserved online at www.torchtheatre.co.uk or by calling the Theatre Box Office on 01646 695267. |
