Take part in the Unity Festival at Wales Millennium Centre     

Take part in the Unity Festival at Wales Millennium Centre A play by Hijinx Theatre, Into my Own and a debut visit to Wales by Australian theatre company Back to Back Theatre are just a couple of the highlights of the third annual Unity Festival to be held in and around Wales Millennium Centre this summer.

The week-long Unity Festival brings together international inclusive art companies and celebrates art created by all, to be enjoyed by all.

Unity Festival runs from 28 June ‘ 4 July 2010 and is presented by Hijinx Theatre, Wales Millennium Centre and MENCAP Cymru in association with Community Music Wales, Disability Arts Cymru, Touch Trust, Maindee Festival, Newport and new venue partner, The Pierhead.

Back to Back Theatre
This innovative company will be running a three day film and performance residency, The Democratic Set. On Wednesday 30 June, the company will also offer an opportunity for members of the public to film their own short video portrait within a purpose built film set. This will then become part of the final performance on Friday 2 July at the Centre’s Weston Studio. This is a great opportunity to literally become a part of the Festival.

Hijinx Theatre - Into My Own
Into My Own is an inspiring play by Centre Resident Hijinx Theatre and has been created to be enjoyed by learning disabled and general community audiences. It follows the story of Anne whose mother has to go into long-term care, leaving no plan for Anne’s future. Then Anne meets the wonderfully colourful character Dilys. Could Dilys be the one who helps Anne embrace her independence and show her the possibilities of a life full of variety and new experiences’

TAN Dance - METAMORPHOSIS
TAN Dance is the community dance organisation that covers Swansea and Neath Port Talbot. It has recently joined with two other companies Indepen-Dance from Scotland and Asi-Somos from Spain, both known for groundbreaking work in their field of inclusive performance. They will present a collaborative piece by internationally-renowned choreographer and pioneer in the development of inclusive dance, Wolfgang Stange. The performance will feature this new work alongside an individual piece by each company.

Blue Eyed Soul Dance Company
Blue Eyed Soul are innovators of inclusive dance, and present two daring pieces:
TAKE; a dance in the park is a bold aerial work that celebrates a rich and colourful 200 year history of live performance. Three dancers glide, float and spin above an aluminium rig, in an adventurous and playful journey through the archives; and
Sugar presents one woman, Sally, her wheelchair and a brand new aerial dance work..

There will also be a host of free workshops and talks, and film screenings as part of the Festival. The Festival culminates with a procession at Newport’s Maindee Festival and a Finale Gig at Cardiff Students’ Union featuring learning disabled recording artist Lizzie Emeh..

Fiona Allan, Artistic Director, Wales Millennium Centre said: ‘This is the third Unity Festival and it always creates such a buzz at the Centre that inspires people to get involved with the array of activity going on around them. This year’s festival is packed with entertainment and there are plenty of opportunities for people to take part.’

Gaynor Lougher Artistic Director Hijinx Theatre added ‘The Unity Festival has been a dream Hijinx has held for many years ‘ now through working with MENCAP Cymru and Wales Millennium Centre that dream has become a reality which is growing year-on-year. Each year we get excited about what’s coming up, but this year especially so ‘ with the breadth of inspiring performances and workshops on show, what’s not to get excited about’
