WYESIDE LOOKING AHEAD

WYESIDE LOOKING AHEAD Wyeside Arts Centre has undergone a number of high profile changes in the past few months. It is now emerging from a period of adjustment during which staff, volunteers, Friends and trustees have been working hard to create a more secure future for the venue.

Suzy West, new Director, has been busy at her desk for a month now.
Suzy said ‘There has not been the usual settling-in period; it’s been down to business straight away. We’ve been working to reduce the fixed costs, which have made immediate financial savings, and we’ve begun discussions with other arts organisations about sharing management functions to cut costs and add to our services. These steps forward mean that the future of this wonderful venue looks much brighter.’
She added ‘The bleaker financial world that we are living in means that everyone, from the government, businesses and organisations, and we as individuals, are trying to make savings. At Wyeside we are looking for the most creative and sustainable way to do this whilst being committed to improving the live shows, cinema and services that we are offering to our community. Doing things differently means that Wyeside Arts Centre should be secure for this financial year and we are now looking ahead to try to create a more stable future.’

Julian Gibson Watt, Chair of the Wyeside’s Board of Trustees said “We are pleased with recent progress, but everyone has to recognise that the future is going to be tough for all Arts Centres and we all have to look for different ways of reducing costs, creating partnerships and sustaining services. At the same time that can open up new ways for improving what we do. Suzy and the Board will be proceeding on that basis.”

As part of Wyeside’s commitment to more community activities, there will be a drama week for children during the summer holidays, run by experienced drama practitioner Debbie Peck who will bring the stories of Peter Pan and a Bear Hunt to life.

Next week our last seven shows of this season begin --- four fantastic weeks packed full of entertainment.
Enjoy a celebration of the iconic Welsh star Ivor Novello, his beautiful melodies still as captivating as ever.
For those looking for some drama in their lives, the acclaimed Welsh theatre company Hijinx bring their inspirational play ‘Into My Own’ to Wyeside. Hijinx are described as “…past masters of the tight, subtle, disarmingly simple art of dramatic storytelling” (David Adams - The Western Mail) An afternoon which won’t disappoint.
