NEW TRUST RELAUNCHES MONMOUTH’S BEAUTIFUL SAVOY

NEW TRUST RELAUNCHES MONMOUTH’S BEAUTIFUL SAVOY The market town of Monmouth, on the England/Wales border houses a theatrical gem – a beautiful working theatre that stands on the oldest theatre site in Wales.

It spent most of the 20th century as a cinema, but had extensive refurbishment in 2005. Now after a sticky financial period, local volunteers have come together to form the new Monmouth Savoy Trust and re-launch the space into a venue for films and live entertainment.

The latest brochure reveals an ambitious programme, including the first ever Monmouth Children’s Festival, the world premiere of a new musical based on the life of locally born legend Charles Rolls, an evening with the star of BBC’s Springwatch Chris Packham, actor Chris Harris’s one man Music Hall, the West End tour of Morecambe, Burlesque, Celtic music courtesy of Robin and Bina Williamson, regular comedy nights and last but not least, the incomparable Julian Clary. This as well as a regular diet of the best new films that the distributors have to offer, delivered with new sound equipment and improved projection.

“The new Trust is taking this theatre on as a service to the community” said spokesman Terry Ashton “We want to make the building as open to local groups as possible and we are planning a Youth Theatre and plenty of events that will involve schools and young people as well as other local groups. I am indebted to the many people who have come forward to help us on the exciting journey to preserve one of the most beautiful theatre buildings in Wales. Please come along and see what the theatre has to offer. We are all working hard behind our newly adopted slogan – See it at the Savoy.
