Germaine Greer, Tim Caroll and Factory Theatre Company join Shakespeare Family |
![]() The Factory Theatre Company will be giving a full weekend contribution with As You Like It on Saturday and The Seagull on Sunday as well as offering a performance element to workshops and discussions. If you have not seen this company before, you must! We are thrilled to announce that we have just secured Germaine Greer, controversial, agenda-setting author and acclaimed academic, to talk about her book “Shakespeare’s Wife” on the evening of Saturday 3 July. Despite the expert exposition of family and relationships in his plays, we know very little indeed about Shakespeare’s own family and even less about his wife. It is commonly believed that Shakespeare viewed Ann Hathaway as a mistake who didn’t even deserve a mention in his will. Germaine sets the story straight in her talk, combining literary-historical techniques with documentary evidence about life in Stratford and putting forward a new and more fruitful set of hypotheses about the life and career of the farmer’s daughter who married our greatest poet. In the process, we can understand more easily and deeply the common Shakespearean themes of finding a worthy wife and constant wives redeeming unjust and deluded husbands. After her talk, Germaine will hold a question and answer session which naturally spreads to cover almost any subject Professor Greer has written on in her long career! We have more exciting artists in the pipeline so watch this space for details! This will be a truly wonderful weekend and a chance to access some incredible professionals. The enchanting Living Willow Theatre is set in the stunningly beautiful Upper Wye valley and offers camping, a magical new nature trail and Shakespeare reference library. There will be a bar and gorgeous food available all weekend. You can buy tickets for the Family Shakespeare Festival through the theatre website at www.livingwillowtheatre.co.uk or via our box office on 01597 811 487.
