CHILDREN’S FIRST EXPERIENCE OF LIVE THEATRE UNDER THREAT DUE TO ARTS COUNCIL CUTS
|
It was announced this week that Spectacle Theatre, along with 31 other revenue funded arts companies, would no longer be revenue funded by the Arts Council of Wales. The Board of Management met to consider the way forward following this disappointing news which means that the first experience of live theatre for thousands of Welsh schoolchildren is under threat.
Spectacle Theatre has provided a Theatre in Education & Community Theatre service throughout Bridgend, Caerphilly, Merthyr and Rhondda Cynon Taf for the last 31 years.
Maureen Harris, who chairs Spectacle’s Management Board, commented: “We wish to thank the Arts Council for the enormous support we have had over the last 30 years and although the news was disappointing we have decided we will try to continue to provide a community theatre service to young people and the communities of the Valleys. As Gwent Theatre find themselves in a similar position we are concerned at the lack of opportunity available to the young people of the SE Wales Valleys to access professional live theatre in the future. We will endeavour to continue to provide a quality theatre experience that is accessible for everyone in our valley communities.”
One Spectacle Board member who has had first hand experience of the impact quality theatre can have on pupils in her role as a Primary School teacher said, "Spectacle Theatre provide quality theatre in education and relevant, dynamic and inspiring work in the Valleys, for the Valleys.”
"For our children to have the same opportunities as more affluent communities, Spectacle Theatre needs to continue to take high quality theatre to schools and communities in Rhondda Cynon Taf and beyond. Who will introduce our children to live theatre if Spectacle are unable to continue?”
