Summer school for budding performers open for business with a Bang!

Summer school for budding performers open for business with a Bang! If you’ve ever wanted to dance like the professionals on Strictly, be the next Dorothy like Danielle Hope or be an award-winning actress like Catherine Zeta-Jones, then Wales Millennium Centre is the place to be this summer.

Budding Welsh performers will have a chance to learn their craft with a week-long training session at a summer school this August.

Now in its third year, Bang! aims to give practical help to young people in Wales aged between 11-15 to develop their talent for singing, dancing, composing and performing at Wales Millennium Centre.

The young performers will be taught by some of Wales’s leading arts professionals, including Welsh-based No Fit State Circus and will have the opportunity to perform at the Centre at the end of the week. They will also see a performance by Cirkus Cirkör, Sweden’s leading circus company.

There are two summer school courses on offer with places for up to 30 on each course. The English-language course runs from 8-13 August and the Welsh-language course is from 15-20 August 2010. The courses cost £225 for a week which includes all training, meals and accommodation at the Urdd City Sleepover at Wales Millennium Centre.

This year’s Bang! is a collaboration between five of the resident companies based at Wales Millennium Centre. Academi, BBC National Orchestra Wales, Urdd Gobaith Cymru, Welsh National Opera and the Centre itself will share their expertise with the young people.

Fiona Allan Artistic Director, Wales Millennium Centre said: ‘Bang! gives children an unique opportunity to learn new skills, develop their talents and work with experts in their field.

‘It’s a fun way for children to spend their summer holidays at the Centre, to experience how it works as an arts venue and hopefully encourage an interest and enthusiasm in the creative industries from an early age.

‘I hope that children from across Wales will jump at the chance to be a part of Bang!’

Alun Owens, Director Gwersyll yr Urdd, Cardiff said: ‘I’m really looking forward to this year’s Bang! The chance to share in the expertise of Wales Millennium Centre’s resident companies is second to none and creates a real buzz around the courses. The young people enjoy learn and perform under the roof of one of the world’s most prominent arts venues – that’s is something that’s worth seeing.’
