A totally different theatre experience at a supermarket near you! Wales Millennium Centre and Galeri, Caernarfon bring Wondermart to Wales.

Shoppers in supermarkets in Cardiff and Caernarfon could get more than they bargained for thanks to the latest theatre production to hit Wales.

Wondermart takes a playful swipe at supermarket culture and examines consumer behaviour by taking participants on a 30 minute audio journey through their local store.

Using an ordinary MP3 player, participants listen and respond to instructions, becoming both actor and audience as they move their trolleys around the shopping aisles. And as their journey unfolds no-one else in the store has any idea of the drama that’s going on around them.

Wondermart is a collaboration by Wales Millennium Centre and Galeri, Caernarfon as part of their five-year creative partnership, established in 2007. MP3 players loaded with the audio track can be loaned from both venues from 16 July to 1 August 2010 and it can also be downloaded from the Centre’s website, free of charge www.wmc.org.uk. Wales Millennium Centre has also produced a Welsh-language version of Wondermart, giving audiences in Wales the opportunity to participate in English or Welsh.

Fiona Allan, Artistic Director, Wales Millennium Centre said: ‘Wondermart is a unique theatre experience that breaks away from traditional theatre conventions. Increasingly theatre is happening in unusual locations. National Theatre Wales’ production For Mountain, Sand & Sea for example is taking place on the beach in Barmouth this month. Similarly Wondermart takes place in a public space, at a time that suits the person taking part and this flexibility means it’s a great way of getting involved in the arts.

‘The Centre has created a Welsh-language version so that audiences can experience Wondermart in their language of choice. And our partnership with Galeri means that audiences north and south can enjoy Wondermart.’

Elen ap Robert, Artistic Director, Galeri said: Theatre can happen anywhere – even in a supermarket and each and everyone of us can be part of the creative process. Wondermart offers an innovative theatrical experience where you would least expect to find it, an experience that is both thought-provoking and entertaining. Somehow the weekly shop will never be the same again.

‘Galeri is delighted to be working in collaboration with Wales Millennium Centre on this fascinating bilingual project as a part of our strategic partnership.‘
