MUTATE BRITAIN COMES TO BIG SPLASH NEWPORT FRESH FROM GLASTONBURY TRIUMPH

MUTATE BRITAIN COMES TO BIG SPLASH NEWPORT FRESH FROM GLASTONBURY TRIUMPH Fresh from a triumphant appearance at the recent Glastonbury Festival, Mutate Britain, the dazzling street sculpture and art collective, is coming to Newport as part of The Big Splash – the spectacular summer festival taking place on both banks of the River Usk in the centre of the city from Saturday 28 August to Sunday 5 September, 11am-11pm each day.

Mutate Britain is a collaboration between the legendary Mutoid Waste Company and The Cordy House Family stable of street artists. Their nine-day residency at The Big Splash provides a unique chance to see and interact with the mind-blowing creations of the UK’s favourite art hooligans, who are rarely seen outside London and the world’s most iconic festivals such as Burning Man in Arizona and Fuji Rock Festival, as well as Glastonbury.

At Glastonbury this year, Mutate Britain occupied The Unfair Ground, a new area at the festival which organiser Michael Eavis said was the best use of this field ever. The crashed passenger plane which they created even hosted a secret DJ set from Radiohead's Thom Yorke.

For their stint in Newport, epic-scale sculptures made from military grade scrap metal such as helicopters, will be set against a backdrop of dynamic street art created on the spot by some of the UK’s most talented artists. Alongside fantastic murals, expect to see twisted vehicles, giant dinosaurs and other metallic creations, including a fire-breathing robot horse - a beast that must be seen to be believed.

Mutate Britain’s Garfield Hackett said, “Our ground-breaking events use their locations to produce a unique and inspiring atmosphere for all to enjoy. The Mutoid Waste Company are legends in modern counter-culture creativity, and we’re really looking forward to bringing the magic Mutoid method, together with our street artist friends, to The Big Splash.”

Mutate Britain will be at The Big Splash from Saturday 28 August to Sunday 5 September, 11am-11pm each day. Entry to their site at The Steel Wave next to the river is free; they are also holding three free but ticketed graffiti art workshops for 12-18 year olds on 28, 29 and 30 August. To reserve a workshop place, call The Riverfront box office on 01633 656679 or email the.riverfront@newport.gov.uk.

This is just one of many incredible events on offer at The Big Splash.
