From Ballet and Breakdance to a Flash Mob and a Tea Dance it's time to Discover Dance in Newport |
![]() The festival is set to include performances, workshops, free events, films and more. Not only will there be opportunities to see top national and international dancers perform many different dance styles, but there will be lots of opportunities for the public to get involved and learn some new moves… There is a strong Welsh focus on the professional performances this year. The Riverfront have a close relationship with Independent Ballet Wales, who will be back with a new performance of the popular and enchanting Welsh folk tale, The Lady of The Lake/ Llyn y Fan Fach. Artistic Director Darius James has created a world of myth and magic and the dancers are set to continue to push the boundaries of classical ballet. The all male Welsh award-winning dance company Dynion will perform Excess, in addition to workshops that will be open for public, and National Dance Company Wales will show work from world-renowned choreographers Stephen Petronio and Itzik Galili. The outstanding Jasmin Vardimon and her dance company return to The Riverfront to combine choreography and use of video, in her new piece 7734. This is set to be yet more seductive than previous shows; Park, Yesterday and Justitia and will lull audiences through quiet beauty and tear at our emotions with its gutsy power. We are delighted that as part of the Festival 2010 celebrations, The Welsh Open BBoy Championships 2010 is now part of Discover Dance. The famous Breakdance competition takes place at the Newport Centre and International b-boy stars such as Ivan Urban Action Figure will entertain. Breakdance films and workshops will also get you in the b-boy/b-girl mood. This year, Discover Dance offers everyone the opportunity to dance. Throughout the festival, there will be workshops for anyone interested in Tea dance/Ballroom, Breakdance, Hip Hop, Contemporary dance, African dance and Flash mob. So, shake it like Beyoncé and get involved! These workshops will take place throughout the festival at The Riverfront, outside (weather permitting), and in empty shops throughout Newport (in conjunction with the Empty Shops Project). For more information, please visit www.newport.gov.uk/theriverfront or call 01633 656679 for a chat - a Discover Dance micro-site and full programme will be launched very soon. We will keep you posted, so watch this space! |
