Diwrnod Heb Ei Debyg / No Other Day Like Today

The National Youth Theatre of Wales is set to bring a brand new play to audiences in Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Clwyd Theatr Cymru in Mold and The Riverfront in Newport, with nine public performances in just eight days!
With support from the Arts Council of Wales, Diwrnod Heb Ei Debyg / No Other Day Like Today is the result of months of research and writing by a group of young writers supported by award-winning playwright, Manon Eames. The final part in a trilogy of work, Diwrnod Heb Ei Debyg / No Other Day Like Today is bang up-to-date with a 21st Century tale that draws upon some of the pre-occupations of young people today – unlike last year’s hugely popular and successful NYTW production of Canrif/Century which presented Wales’ recent historical heritage, and Mawreddog y Mabinogi / Magnificent Myths of the Mabinogi in 2008, which focused on Wales’ mythological past.
Diwrnod Heb Ei Debyg / No Other Day Like Today is located in the imaginary town of Llanhynallallacarall; it charts the antics and follows the colourful characters of the town during one, eventful twenty-four hour period. During the early stages of writing, Manon and NYTW Artistic Director, Tim Baker, encouraged the young writers to look at the structure of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood. It proved to be a useful vehicle from which to explore a raft of creative ideas and possibilities.
NYTW Young Writers comprises 17 young people (ages 16 – 24 years). As a group, the writers first met in July 2008; since then, they have come together over a series of weekends during which scenes, characters and plot-lines have slowly emerged, all driven by the imaginations and acute observations of the young writers themselves. Growing up in ‘the communication age’ is at the heart of their story as are the errors, excesses and expectations of a young generation. It’s summer, 2010 – sometime in the early morning, a distraught girl steps onto the parapet of a bridge; at lunchtime, celebrations begin for the marriage of the year; at dusk, a shot rings out in Afghanistan.....
Diwrnod Heb Ei Debyg / No Other Day Like Today combines story-telling and dialogue with music, movement, and audio-visual effects.
The members of the Youth Theatre are aged between 16 – 21 years and are drawn from all over Wales. Over 200 young people auditioned for NYTW 2010. The Youth Theatre is managed by WJEC on behalf of the 22 unitary authorities of Wales.
