Northumberland Theatre Company present a must see production of the Charles Dickens classic on Wednesday 22nd September at The Wyeside arts centre Builth Wells
It’s not about a shop at all. Dickens changed his mind. It’s a journey, a flight undertaken by the girl Nell and her gambling-addicted Grandfather. A flight from demons and enemies.
Dogging their footsteps are the bad-guys, Quilp and the crooked lawyer Brass. Also hard on their trail is the Single Gentleman, mysterious and rich. Along the road Nell an Grandfather meet a whole Fun and Horror House set of characters who help and hinder, amuse and bemuse, sucker and succour them. And then there’s Dick Swiveller and his Marchioness, the comedy second-leads who get dragged into full-screen close up as the lovers.
In this innovative and imaginative adaptation Little Nell and Quilp are played by the same female actor reflecting the struggle between good and evil. True to the inner life of the book this adaptation shows Dickens at his best and as a master of the grotesque.
This well-respected theatre company receive fantastic audience reviews such as "This was professional theatre at its best. Who needs television?" and "A triumph… the finest theatre I have seen for years." (The Stage Newspaper on The Old Curiosity Shop, 1998.)
The Old Curiosity Shop is on Wednesday 22nd September at 7.30pm, tickets are available priced £14 in advance, £16 on the day.
