WALES MILLENNIUM CENTRE IS OPEN TO ALL THIS WEEKEND

The nine cultural arts organisations that call Wales Millennium Centre their home are promising a fun-filled and free weekend as they join together to give people a true feel of what happens inside and behind the scenes at the iconic building.
The Centre will throw open its doors this weekend [2 and 3 October 2010] with a packed two days of free performances and activities for the whole family between 10.00am and 7.00pm both days.
Visitors to the 'Open Weekend' will be encouraged to take part in the activities, explore the Centre and watch performances throughout the building. The Centre’s staff will also be on hand to talk about all aspects of the Centre from the shows it stages to working in the creative industries.
Highlights of the Open Weekend include:
• A backstage tour to scenery street where the sets are stored, operate the lighting board or climb to the fly floor 12 meters high above the stage
• Balloonatics who will make incredible balloon toys and characters throughout the two days
• Singing workshops with Welsh National Opera and a performance by Llanidloes-based Wesley Singers
• Welsh-language writing workshops with Academi and bilingual ‘stand-up poetry’
• Performances by Grand Theatre of Lemmings and their mischievous ostriches
• Demonstrations with the costume department at the WNO and some special effects make up with designer Roxy Butler
• An open rehearsal with BBC National Orchestra of Wales
• Family drama fun with Cardiff-based drama practitioner Dylan Adams
• A craft workshop for all ages – make your own mini Centre or try out felt-making
• A tour of the Touch Trust space to see how it uses music and touch therapy for individuals with complex needs
• Ffwrnais Awen the Urdd’s theatre group which will perform on the Glanfa
• Hijinx Theatre’s community group Odyssey Theatre Group and a performance from Hijinx Theatre’s band, Vaguely Artistic’
• Pre-show talks with WNO ahead of its performance of Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute
Fiona Allan, Wales Millennium Centre’s Artistic Director said: ‘We’re opening our doors this weekend and joining forces with our resident organisations and the wider arts community so that people can call in, explore the arts and take part in a range of free activities.
‘The Centre is a place for everyone in Wales and has a wide range of activities happening inside it. This weekend is a great opportunity for communities across Wales to see what the Centre has on offer and for families to enjoy taking part in all the different activities available, from singing and drama to tours and talks.’
